The Bride is a timeless album that captures the earthy aesthetic of an earlier age. This collection of dark folk and country songs will haunt you long after the last song is played.
NOTES
“One boy, one girl, some grief, some joy, memories are made of this “
Terry Gilkeyson, Richard Dehr & Frank Miller

It all started with a country road and a ghost and ended up as Helen Begley’s debut album “The Bride”. This is a collection of disarming songs presented by a voice of experience whose world weary potency is a perfect vehicle for the stories of characters who love so hard that they go to extraordinary lengths in their search for relationship.

The album opens with the joyous, banjo led “Boilermaker’s Wife” that celebrates a fifty- year marriage. Then it boot scoots along with a lonely cowboy on “The Cowboy Song” which eventually leads us to the obsessive “Tango”, set with wailing violin and slide banjo, that lurches and lists like a drunken lover. The album finishes with the haunting, straight to tape “Wedding Song” whose simple, one chord guitar part, creaks and groans like a slow moving wedding procession as the vocals draw us into the intimacy of the final marriage scene. Along the way we are treated to tales of murderous proposals, desperate breakups, tragic-comic meetings and rueful memoirs.

“The Bride” is co-produced by Helen Begley, recently of Melbourne band, Milk, and Lachlan Wooden at Lachlan’s new West Brunswick Studio “Planet of the Tapes”. They have aimed to capture the songs with a deep respect to the aesthetic from a previous era of recording when every time you listened to an album you felt like you were in the room with the band. This timeless recording of dark folk and country songs boasts the talents of musicians Paul Jonas (Prayer Babies, Idle Hoes) on violin, Carl Pannuzzo (Pot ‘n Kettle, Checkerboard Lounge, Totally Gourdgeous) on piano and drums and Penny Larkins (Pot ‘n Kettle, Salvation Jane, Mamma Mia) on backing vocals. As well as her brooding vocals, Helen adds guitar, banjo, resonator guitar and accordion to the understated arrangements.
